Ans. As the name itself defines the whole story, the site map is the navigation map of your website. The site maps are of two types - HTML page, XML page.
The first type of site map is generally a HTML site map that contains the hierarchical description of the address of the pages mentioned in your website. This HTML pages designed for the visitors to help them in hassle free navigation through out the site.
The next type of site map is XML Site map, this type of site map is meant for providing information to google about all the web pages present in the website.
Importance of Site map
The site map is a very logical way to communicate with Search Engines.
1. It provides better visibility and easy navigation support to its visitors and search engine bots as well.
2. It informs the search engine about any changes or update made on the site.
3. It helps in cases of messy internal links like broken internal link or orphan pages that cannot be reached other way. ( But it is always better to fix those problems without relying on site maps.)
4. As Google has included Site map as one of its indexing parameter, so inclusion of site map helps to faster site indexing.
5. Site map also helps in increasing keyword density.
6. It also helps search engine overcoming trouble in understanding CGI navigation and image maps.
